Conditions for Participation of Universities

The information on this subpage is directed to universities and colleges. End users participating in the ABC of course don't have to read all these details. For them it will be particularly easy to take part and to enjoy the challenge without any previous knowledge.

Declaration of participation by universities and colleges

Universities and colleges declare their ABC participation by submitting the following to beemo: the required input mentioned below as well as a plain confirmation referring to the conditions for participation on this webpage.

Timeline

The ABC 2019 will take place from March 1, 2019 to November 30 2019. Each universitiy or college decides during which month it participates for 30 days.

Required input from universities and colleges

Participating universities and colleges are asked to provide specified input for the ABC team. beemo will display this input (e.g. the University’s logo and some characteristic facts and numbers) in the Naviki app and on the ABC website. The required input is specified here ...

Communication and prizes for participants

Communication is a key task, since it is crucial for reaching a high level of people actively taking part. Participating universities and colleges are responsible for promoting the ABC towards its potential participants, namely staff and students. To a limited extent beemo will provide content for adequate communication activities in this regard. Furthermore, universities are responsible for providing prizes for participants (corresponding to the university-wide leaderboards specified below).

Costs

For universities and colleges as well as for their staff and students participating in the ABC 2019 is free.

Privacy

By joining the contest, participants accept the Naviki Terms of Use, which will be immediately accessible from the Naviki app. The Naviki Terms of Use are in line with the strict European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). A specific section of the Naviki Terms of Use relates to the ABC. Users will not be able to see trips recorded by other participants if these have been declared as ‘private’ by their creator. Participants can easily switch their individual routes from ‘public’ to ’private’. Users don't have to provide their real names but a nickname, which will be visbile publicly.

Smartphone app

For realising the ABC, beemo will provide the smartphone app "Naviki". Within the ABC the app will be used for recording trips, displaying leaderboards and managing participation as specified below. All Naviki features required for participating in the ABC are free of charge.

Universities, faculties and user-generated teams

Every participating university within the ABC will be represented in the Naviki app and on the ABC website www.go-abc.org. A participant will have to select their university when they join the ABC. Cycled trips of the participant will then count for the selected university. Furthermore, when joining the ABC, each participant can select an academic discipline they belong to. Trips cycled by the participant will then also count for the selected discipline. The app will provide a set of academic disciplines to select from that is feasible for participants from all international universities. Moreover, participants can create user-generated teams. The minimum number of participants for a user-generated team is 5. The maximum number of participants per user-generated team is 10. Each participant can join one user-generated team. There is no limit regarding the number of participants from the University.

Leaderboards

The following leaderboards are available.

The universities worldwide relative leaderboard is based on the sum of miles/kilometres cycled by each university. In this leaderboard the result for each university is based on the ratio between the amount of cycled miles/kilometres and the number of staff and students (distance / 1000 persons), so that universities of different size are comparable.

The universities worldwide leaderboard is based on the sum of miles/kilometres cycled by each university. The absolute number of cycled miles/kilometres counts.

The disciplines university-wide leaderboard is based on the sum of miles/kilometres cycled by each academic discipline within a university. The absolute number of the cycled distance counts. A discipline will appear in this leaderboard as soon as a minimum of 10 participants has selected the respective discipline.

The disciplines worldwide leaderboard is based on the sum of miles/kilometres cycled by each academic discipline at world-wide level.

The teams university-wide leaderboard is based on the sum of miles/kilometres cycled by each team within a university. The average number of miles/kilometres per team member counts.

The teams world-wide leaderboard is based on the sum of miles/kilometres cycled by each team at world-wide level. The average number of miles/kilometres per team member counts.

The individuals university-wide leaderboard is based on the individual miles/kilometres cycled by each participant within a university.

The individuals world-wide leaderboard is based on the individual miles/kilometres cycled by each participant at world-wide level.

Leaderboard data are updated every 5 minutes. In order to approve bicycle trips only, an automatic filter excludes trips exceeding predefined limits on maximum and average speed as well as on trip length. For each leaderboard category mentioned above the leaderboard data are available within the Naviki app and on the ABC website (www.go-abc.org). In the Naviki app participants are able to view the university-wide leaderboards of their respective university only. On the ABC website the university-wide leaderboards for all universities and the world-wide leaderboards are visible.

Heatmaps

A heatmap will be available via the Naviki app and on the ABC website. The heatmap shows all recorded trips of all ABC participants and highlights highly frequented routes. For privacy reasons the heatmap will be created excluding the first and the last km of each trip. The heatmap will also display all participating universities, their locations and their current rank within the relative university leaderboard.

Validation of recorded trips

Participants will be able collect miles/kilometres for their university wherever they cycle. In order to make sure that only cycled trips will count for the contests, the following filters on the average speed, the maximum speed and the total length of each recorded trip will be applied. Average speed: 30 km/h, maximum speed: 45 km/h, maximum length: 80 km. In case a participant joins the ABC after its start, all trips tracked before joining (but after the start of the ABC) will count if they pass the above mentioned filters.

Features within the app

Within the ABC, the Naviki app will be used for recording trips, displaying leaderboards and managing staff's and students' participation. All app features required for participating in the ABC are free of charge. The Naviki app provides a route-tracking service and it uses a recording algorithm that considers time, location and velocity in such a way that the track is recorded with an ideal balance between accuracy and battery consumption. Tracking is available offline. It requires access to GPS. Users can see the list of his or her own trips, join the ABC as well as his or her university, faculty and team and see the leaderboards described above. The Naviki app is available in the following languages: English, Italian, French, German, Lithuanian, Swedish, Spanish, Catalan, Hungarian, Polish, Dutch, Danish, Czech, Arabic, Turkish.

Contest Administration

A contest administration backend will be available. Participating universities and colleges can optionally take over the role of the University Contest Admin. The University Contest Admin has access to all trips from all participants of his or her university, can ban trips (this operation will remove the trip from leaderboards) and can ban selected participants of his or her university or college from the ABC.
